The Briarwood Christian School football team wasted little time to get on the board Friday and built an early cushion in a 42-17 win over Corner in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs at Lions Pride Stadium.
The Lions scored on their first two possessions on a 33-yard touchdown run from J.R. Tran-Reno and then a 35-yard touchdown run by William Gray after Corner fumbled away its first possession.
“It was great for the guys’ work to pay off. We’ve been practicing great and I knew we were due to break out and have some nice plays and really get a bunch of points. I knew we were due to do that,” Briarwood head coach Fred Yancey said.
Briarwood coughed up three fumbles in the game, beginning with a fumble in the end zone by Gray as he was going in for the Lions’ third score to start the second quarter.
“I feel good about an awful lot of things. We’re not used to having this many turnovers, at least not this year. This team has been playing without those kind of turnovers, but I’m not going to let that take away from the good effort and the way they played,” Yancey said.
Gray connected with Kolby Kwarcinski on a 38-yard pass with 7:32 to play in the first half to set up a 1-yard QB keeper for a touchdown and a 21-0 Briarwood lead. Twenty seconds later, Corner quarterback Deven Daniel fumbled and Mark Hand scooped it and scored to make it 28-0.
Corner got on the board late in the first half, 28-7, after a pass interference call on the Lions helped extend the drive. Daniel capped it with a 12-yard touchdown run.
Briarwood answered with 1:36 to play in the half with a 31-yard touchdown connection from Gray to Carson Eddy. Carson Donnelly picked off Daniel at the 4 to close the first half with Briarwood leading 35-7.
Corner capitalized on two Briarwood fumbles on the first two possessions of the third quarter, resulting in a 2-yard touchdown run by Daniel and a 35-yard field goal by Chase Jones. The scores cut into Briarwood’s lead, 35-17, to close the third quarter.
The Lions opened the fourth quarter with a 60-yard drive to make it 42-17 on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Gray to Kwarcinski. Similar to the first half, the game ended with a Briarwood interception, as Michael Murphy picked off a Corner pass at the 6 with 52 seconds to play.
Briarwood (10-1) will remain home for the second round of the playoffs on Nov. 11 to host Russellville (8-3), which defeated Guntersville, 35-28, in the first round. Corner’s season ends at 7-4.
“I love playing at home,” Yancey said. “We’re excited to be making it to round two. We try our very best to try not to look beyond whatever round we’ve got to play, and tonight I thought our boys were focused and they were right here playing.”
