The former Dick’s Sporting Goods in the Brook Highland Plaza shopping center will be home to a new tenant next year.

Best Buy will be relocating from its River Ridge location to the vacant building a few miles further south on U.S. 280 near Alabama 119 and the Greystone area.

The company will take over the 44,000 square-foot building at the end of the three-store complex also featuring White House Interiors and HomeGoods.

The store became vacant when Dick’s Sporting Goods left the property to take on a new lease in The Village at Lee Branch.

While the current location is narrowly in Shelby County, the new storefront will be closer for residents of Chelsea, North Shelby County and the Greystone portion of Hoover.

It also marks the only Best Buy location left in Shelby County, after the Alabaster location closed nearly three years ago.

At that time, company spokesperson Danielle Schumann talked about the 280 store’s success and said the business climate had changed since the Alabaster store opened, when Best Buy was heavily competing with Circuit City and was quickly adding brick-and-mortar stores.

“Since then, customer trends have changed,” Schumann said. “Over the last few years, we have seen customers preferring other Birmingham-area stores off Highway 280 and in Hoover. Customers speak with their feet, and we are listening to them.”

Now, it appears they are listening again.

The new location off U.S. 280 is expected to have considerable upgrades to many different departments in the store to give shoppers a new experience with more options.

An opening date for the new location has not been set.
