Eagle Point Golf Course under contract for housing development

Eagle Point Golf Club is for sale and is likely to be replaced by residential development. Highpointe Properties is under contract to purchase the property, according to Highpointe manager Connor Farmer.

The golf course is zoned for single family housing (R-1) and the clubhouse and driving range are zoned for multi-family housing (R-5), according to maps provided by Shelby County Development Services Manager Chad Scroggins. Scroggins said that the golf course's new owner could build to fit within those uses on the property without requiring a rezoning hearing.

However, Farmer said that Highpointe wants to build only single-family residences, not apartments. He declined to go into further details about specific plans due to confidentiality agreements. Highpointe submitted a rezoning request to Shelby County on March 31.

“We’ve come up with a plan that if we can get it approved with Shelby County, we will not be doing apartments,” Farmer said.

Farmer plans to meet with Eagle Point Homeowners Association President Raymond Newton soon, he said, to share what Highpointe wants to do with the property. He hopes that once current Eagle Point residents see Highpointe's plans, they will favor the project instead potential buyers who may want to build apartments on the clubhouse property.

“I think we’ll have their support once they understand what we want to do,” Farmer said.

Scroggins said his department has not had a chance to fully review the rezoning application and ensure that it has all the necessary components. If it is found to be complete, Scroggins said that the rezoning request would most likely be placed on the May 16 Planning Commission meeting.

Once that meeting is set, Farmer said he hopes to get residents to attend and show their support for Highpointe's plan.

"The golf course was going to be sold one way or another," Farmer said. "Somebody was going to develop it, we’re glad that it’s going to be us.”
