While on vacation with their kids this past summer, Jeff and Kimberly Wilson came up with the idea for a business that would bring something new to the U.S. 280 and Greystone area.

As full-time business people and parents of three children, opening a salon specially tailored to the wants and needs of children seemed like a natural choice.

“We had kind of been kicking around the idea of opening a business that was kid-directed but really didn’t know what it was,” Kimberly Wilson said. “We just knew that we wanted to do something.”

She said she realized she was overpaying for her daughters’ haircuts by taking them to the same high end salon that she got her own hair cut and styled at, and when Jeff Wilson would take their 2-year-old son to a chain salon, they’d often deal with stylists that either got frustrated or simply didn’t want to cut children’s hair.

“There needs to be a better alternative where you can take them to one place and get everything done,” Kimberly Wilson said. “That’s really where it stems from.”

The focus of Tangles and Toes Salon will be to help children feel relaxed and welcomed when they walk in the door and special and confident as they walk out. Televisions at each styling station and themed styling chairs are a few touches to make the salon fun for kids.

The salon is going to offer different haircut and styling options, including a shampoo, cut, blow out and style package similar to what would be done at a high end salon.

“Whatever the mom would get, we want the child to be able to get as well,” Kimberly Wilson said.

For infants, a baby’s first haircut package will be offered where the parents get a keepsake lock of their child’s hair in a commemorative case.

The salon will also have a yearly haircut package so parents can pay a flat rate and get a certain number of haircuts for their child for a full year. This idea came from Kimberly Wilson’s own struggles with trying to find a cost-effective way to keep her son’s hair trimmed.

“I’m in my bathroom cutting his hair every three weeks, and I would go broke if I were paying full price for that all the time,” she said. “… So I feel like if I were to offer a package at a discounted rate, it would really help moms with boys with thick hair that grows fast.”

Traditional spa services such as polishing, manicures and pedicures will also be available. For girls, the salon offers a party option where up to eight girls can get manicures, pedicures and have their hair put up in an updo. With this package comes the use of the party room for pizza, cake and drinks, as well as having the entire facility closed for the event.

“Our idea is, you’re paying a little bit more for service, so we’re going to give you our undivided attention,” Jeff Wilson said.

Tangles and Toes Salon is located at 5479 U.S. 280, Suite 112. The grand opening is set for Feb. 8, and afterward its hours will be Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
