Women in Business: Breanna Sexton - Re/Max Southern Homes

by

After starting her career in sales, Breanna Sexton decided to restart her path in real estate with RE/MAX Southern Homes. Since making the change, Sexton said she has enjoyed the independence and flexibility that the field of real estate has given her.

“It’s a leap of faith to step out on your own and [try] to make something for yourself,” Sexton said. “It just seemed fun, like a good challenge.”

Part of this challenge, Sexton said, is that real estate has a quick pace, with no two days holding the same workload. Part of that comes from being flexible and adjusting to the needs of different clients.

“I enjoy the challenge that there is something different everyday,” Sexton said. “I enjoy the people whom I meet and to be able to connect them to a home that they love.”

The opportunity to interact with so many different people is what Sexton said is one of her favorite aspects of her job.

“I always aim to provide customer service and put them first,” Sexton said. “I provide basically everything to a client. You’re the therapist; you’re the money manger; you’re everything to them.”

By giving as much as she can to her clients, Sexton said she has also had to learn to work on balancing her personal life with business. While Sexton said that she enjoys working with her clients and building work relationships, she still places priority with her family.

“I have been lucky to have clients who respect my boundaries,” Sexton said. “You have to set those boundaries or else it will overtake your life, and you won’t be able to even be at home for dinner with your family.”

Another challenge Sexton said she had to adapt to when starting her career in real estate is that she had to prove herself as both a new employee, but also as a woman.

“There’s always challenges when you’re used to male-dominated work fields,” Sexton said. “The older real estate agents can push you around.”

Sexton said she has also experienced clients who prefer working with a male agent, despite her success rates or experience.

“I just feel like sometimes people don’t recognize women and their strengths and what they can do,” Sexton said. “I explain the facts and go from there. If they prefer to work with a male, I’ll send them on their way. It’s not worth that argument if they’re stuck in that mind set.”

For any women looking to start a career in real estate, Sexton said they will have to believe in themselves and stick to their convictions.

“Don’t let people push you around,” Sexton said. “Everybody runs their business differently, [so] be true to yourself.”

For Sexton, being true to herself means providing intimate customer service and still finding time for her personal life, while also giving back to the community.

“All of the work that I do with my real estate goes into my charity, [which] translates into money for the community,” Sexton said.

These charities include Focus on Recovery, Kid One Transport andBetter Basics.

“I believe that you can’t have what you have unless you’re willing to give it away freely,” Sexton said. “You can’t take it with you [and] there’s someone out there that need it more than I do.”
