Women in Business: Dr. Jessica Palmer - Narrows Family Eye Care

by

Dr. Jessica Palmer, owner of Narrows Family Eye Care, knows the value of patience and customer service.

She began working in customer service positions at the age of 13.

“I’ve learned to listen more and talk less,” she said. “I’ve found that in doing this, you learn more, and this translates to better patient care.”

And premier care is something Narrows Family Eye Care prides itself on.

As one of three optometrists at the clinic, Dr. Palmer chose her profession at the urging of her college counselor to shadow local physicians. She has a love of science and a desire to help others, which led her to optometry. She earned her doctorate of optometry from the University of Alabama in 2005, and, in 2007, she opened Narrows Family Eye Care.

“I enjoy helping people the most,” she said of her job. “The bigger the challenge, the better. There is little I find more rewarding than helping to improve one’s quality of life by helping them to see better.”

Dr. Palmer, who was awarded the Shelby County Optometrist of the Year in 2015, is also a member of the American Optometric Association, the Alabama Optometric Association and the Birmingham Area Optometric Society. Through her practice, she and her team members strive to deliver high quality patient care.

Narrows Family Eye Care focuses on primary eye care, pediatric eye examinations, eye disease management and general or special contact lens fittings. The practice also offers vision therapy for strabismus, or crossed-eye, patients.

Like many people, Dr. Palmer said she comes from a “long line of contact lens and glasses wearers,” which gives her great experience in that area.

Dr. Palmer said Narrows Family Eye Care stands out through its modern and welcoming decor and customer service. Since opening in 2007, Dr. Palmer said the business has gained two additional optometrists — Dr. Rena Lewis and Dr. Leah Kirkemier — and expanded to include a second practice in Sylacauga. Patients can order contact lenses online and try on glasses in-store as well.

And as technology has evolved, Narrows Family Eye Care has incorporated it into its daily appointments while maintaining personalized care.

“I think our highly knowledgeable and friendly doctors and staff leave a lasting impression,” Dr. Palmer said. “You are never just another set of eyes to us.”
