Women in Business: Dr. Shani Lampley - Brookwood Baptist Health Primary Care Network

Dr. Shani Lampley practices internal medicine, which means she takes a whole body, “multi-dimensional approach” to her patients’ health.

“Internal medicine covers a broad and comprehensive spectrum of diseases that affects adults,” Dr. Lampley said. “This can sometimes be intimidating because it does not limit you to a particular organ or disease. The challenge associated with this multi-dimensional approach is what interested me about internal medicine.”

Dr. Lampley is in her second year practicing in Brookwood Baptist Health’s Primary Care Network. She studied at Meharry Medical College in Nashville and did her residency at University of South Alabama before setting up her office in Greystone.

Although Dr. Lampley is a general practitioner, she has a special interest in treating chronic conditions, such as Type II diabetes and hypertension, or high blood pressure. “These conditions are very prevalent in the adult population. They span across different races, various ages and both genders,” she said.

The American Diabetes Association estimates more than 30 million U.S. adults have diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control report 75 million U.S. adults have hypertension.

Other common chronic conditions that Dr. Lampley helps patients manage include obesity, asthma and hyperlipidemia. Dr. Lampley also treats acute issues such as upper respiratory infections and urinary tract infections. Her office also offers yearly preventative screenings, physical exams and immunizations.

“My favorite experience as a doctor is seeing patients who have overcome many health issues reach a place where their health and quality of life are improved,” Dr. Lampley said. “Some patients have what seem to be insurmountable health problems that can sometime have them feeling as if all is lost, or that they are defeated. But with patience, vigilance on my part as well as theirs, we manage to get them in a good, stable place.”

When her patients have established healthy life habits and brought their chronic conditions under control, Dr. Lampley said she gets the satisfaction of seeing how much their lives change for the better.

“Having their spirit renewed gives me the greatest joy,” Dr. Lampley said.

As part of Brookwood Baptist Health’s network, Dr. Lampley said she places a priority on spending plenty of time with each patient, rather than getting them in and out of the office as quickly as possible.

“Proper health care is not supposed to be done at a ‘fast food’ pace,” Dr. Lampley said. “Our patients deserve our patience and attention. It is impossible to provide each patient with the proper standard of care when the face time for a doctor and patient takes only a matter of minutes.”

Dr. Lampley’s office staff exemplifies that caring attitude, as well.

“My staff is the friendliest, warm and welcoming group of people. This extends from the first encounter our patients have at the front office, to our nursing and laboratory staff,” she said.

When searching for a doctor, in internal medicine or any specialty, Dr. Lampley said it’s important to look for a provider who combines medical expertise with warmth and understanding.

“I would also advise that patients search for doctors with confidence in their knowledge, the ability and humility to know when to seek a specialist, and also to find one who has passion for their job and compassion for their patients,” Dr. Lampley said.
