Women in Business: Staci Duke - Plume Home & Lifestyle

by

Staci Duke worked as a paralegal for 15 years before she decided to make a drastic career change.

“My daughter was getting older and going to college soon, and I felt like if I wanted to make a change, that I needed to go ahead and do it,” Duke said.

Duke grew up in Homewood and enjoyed shopping at the unique establishments in the area. She and her family now live near Lee Branch, where she noticed an absence of places to shop that were similar to the Downtown Homewood stores she loved to frequent. After seeing that need, Duke decided to open a place of her own.

In June, she opened Plume Home and Lifestyle, where she sells candles, bath and body products, stationery, beauty products, jewelry and clothing in a minimalistic style.

A challenge she’s faced since opening the store is staying true to her goals for her business.

“People are always telling you what you can do better or change to adapt to current trends,” she said. “For me, it’s always been about being unique and staying true to my vision for the business and not necessarily fitting in with the trends.”

As for the future, Duke wants to focus on growing what she has already established. She also sees a possibility of adding new lines of products, such as linens or bedding.

Her favorite part about what she does is the people she interacts with daily.

“I love talking to customers, getting to know them and watching them try new things,” Duke said. “When they like what I carry, that’s what makes me happy.”
