Women in Business: Dr. Jessica Palmer - Narrows Family Eye Care

by

Dr. Jessica Palmer loves meeting and helping people, and she comes from a long line of eyeglass-wearers. That’s why she went into her line of work and why she opened Narrows Family Eye Care in 2007.

“I became an eye doctor because I just wanted to pursue what I was confident in, familiar with and would enjoy doing every day,” she said. “I really enjoy helping people to see. Our patients become like family, and I look forward to seeing them every year.”

Palmer says she loves what she does. She enjoys building lasting relationships with patients, getting to know them, their lifestyle and their vision needs.

“We sincerely love what we do,” she said. “I think we can honestly say that we look forward to coming to work, and I feel it shows with our patient service. We want to improve our patients’ quality of life as much as we can through helping their vision.”

They are also equipped with the most recent technology for ocular disease management and contact lens fittings. They also handle eye emergencies and co-management of eye surgery such as LASIK.

“When people come to see us, they can feel assured that the doctors and staff are very knowledgeable about our field, most of us being in the industry for 10 to 20 years,” she said.

Palmer herself was named the Greater Shelby County Optometrist of the Year in 2015. She graduated from Troy State University in 1999 with her bachelor’s of science and earned her doctorate of optometry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005.

She is also a member of the American Optometric Association, the Alabama Optometric Association and the Birmingham Area Optometric Society.

Having expertise is important to Palmer in her work, she said. She also feels it is important to offer quality eyeglasses.

The optical shop at Narrows Family Eye Care carries a large selection of eyeglasses, designer frames and sunglasses. They offer the latest European and American designer eyewear collections in a variety of styles, colors and materials, including titanium, stainless steel and plastic. And they offer specialty eyewear such as sports glasses, protective lenses and lenses for scuba diving.

“Quality and expertise are what helps us to stand out from others, especially since we are now in the day and age of online retailers vying for your business,” she said.

Since it started, Narrows Family Eye Care has also expanded to include two more optometrists, Dr. Leah Kirkemier and Dr. Rena Lewis. It has also grown to include a location in Sylacauga, where Dr. Anita Saxena sees patients.

At the beginning of 2019, the original Narrows Family Eye Care will move to its new location in the old Ruff N Tuff Outdoors building, off U.S. 280 in Chelsea.

And no matter how much the clinic grows, Palmer said every patient is important. “You are never just another set of eyes to us,” she said.
