Shelby County Mental Health Programs Coordinator and Legal Counsel to the Probate Judge Allison Boyd has announced her candidacy for Shelby County Probate Judge.

In a release announcing her candidacy, Boyd said the last two years of serving Shelby County have been “more fulfilling than I ever imagined.”

“[I]t has allowed me to pursue my passion of working with our community leaders, first responders, and advocates toward creating a better mental health system,” Boyd said. “It has also afforded me the opportunity to continue my legal career working in other areas of the probate court handling cases involving estates, guardianships and conservatorships, and condemnations.”

During her time as mental health programs coordinator, several new programs have been created in the county. This includes a 40-hour crisis response training for law enforcement, fire fighters and other first responders; and a community mental health fair; a community crisis response roundtable group.

“While Mental Health has publicly been the focus of my experience, I have been involved in many other ways during my time in the Probate Court,” Boyd said.

This included reviewing cases filed with the Probate Court and being appointed as a special probate judge, where she presided over adoption cases and involuntary commitment hearings.

During the 2016 Presidential Election, Boyd also worked with the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office in conducting a pilot program using E-Pollbooks to record voter check-in information.

“This program was so successful, it had the backing of all of our local election officials and the Shelby County Commission recently voted to implement these devices in all polling locations in the upcoming election cycle,” Boyd said.

Running for Probate Judge is a calling she is passionate about, Boyd said in the release, and would be a venue in which she could “use my talents and abilities to continue to serve the citizens of Shelby County and make it a better place for my family as well as yours.”

“Judge Fuhrmeister has been an excellent mentor to me and will be greatly missed by so many, I know it will be impossible to fill his shoes but it is my hope that by running for this office, I can maintain continuity in the way the office has been run in the past, while also looking for new and innovative ways to improve the services we provide the public in the future,” Boyd said.
