Chelsea Council approves property rezoning

During a brief meeting on July 6, the Chelsea City Council approved an ordinance to rezone a property on Old Highway 280.

The rezoning request was submitted by Mary F. King, who owns the property, and was to rezone from E-1 (residential) to B-2 (commercial). The Chelsea Planning Commission had recommended approving the request for the 6-acre property, and the city council unanimously approved the ordinance.

While a public hearing for the rezoning ordinance was on the agenda, no one signed up to speak during the public hearing.

During pre-council, Mayor Tony Picklesimer and the council discussed Saturday’s Chelsea Fest and Big Kaboom. While the Big Kaboom is a yearly event, this was the first year for Chelsea Fest.

Picklesimer said he believed the event was a success, even though rain might have deterred some people from attending. The council discussed a few changes they think could have helped, including larger signs to direct traffic and possibly using a smaller portion of the field.

An after-action meeting to discuss the event will be scheduled, Picklesimer said, and at that time they will discuss positives and negatives of the event, as well as if anything needs to change in the future.

He also thanked all of the city employees, volunteers and Chelsea COPs who helped organize and manage the event.

• The council approved to pay the city’s bills.
• Rector Eric Mancil from St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church gave the invocation.
• Boy Scout Troop 354 led the Pledge of Allegiance.
