The Shelby County Commission’s last meeting of the year was an abbreviated one. Other than approving the minutes from its Dec. 11 meeting and approving the bills, requisitions and check register, the commission had one agenda item.

That item, a request for a retail beer and table wine license for Paradise Point Marina in Columbiana, was approved by the commission.

During the meeting, Commissioner Lindsey Allison updated the commission on a recent meeting with legislators. Allison said the meeting was very positive and that during the meeting, legislators requested a good means of communication with commissioners.

“They asked for a messaging system where we could communicate with each other, particularly when they are on the floor,” Allison said.

The commission briefly discussed potential options for communication, including a group text or some sort of messaging system. No official decisions were made.

Allison also recommended they attend the January Greater Shelby Chamber of Commerce luncheon, which will feature a panel of the Shelby County Legislative Delegation for a preview of the upcoming legislative session.

During his report to the commission, County Manager Alex Dudchock reminded everyone that in January, the county will begin its recruiting process for a new manager of the county’s Juvenile Detention Facility to replace Debra Roulaine, who is retiring. The new detention manager will have additional duties because of “direct actions in the field, character education and protocols with four public school systems,” Dudchock said.
