In addition to approving the minutes from its meeting on April 24, the Shelby County Commission discussed various bids as well as the construction of a new bridge over Fourmile Creek on County Road 441 the morning of May 8.

The first bid, which dealt with picnic tables and benches, was awarded to Diversified Material Fabrications with a base bid, times 10 each, of $17,460.00. The second bid discussed was with regard to the county's water services and its purchase of chlorine to disinfect the water. Allied Universal Corporation was awarded the bid.

Commission members continued by approving a resolution to negotiate for parcels of land adjacent to the bridge crossing Fourmile Creek on County Road 441 near Wilsonville.

Under this approval, the commission also voted for the county to acquire easements necessary to perform construction on the bridge. According to the National Bridge Index, the bridge was originally built in 1955 and is classified with a status of being "structurally deficient." It is noted on the index, however, that the bridge "meets minimum tolerable limits to be left in place as is."

Under the resolution, the county will be able replace the bridge.

County manager Alex Dudchock also announced the appointment of a new county coroner, Cilina (Lina) Evans. Because the governor had not yet appointed a new coroner, Dudchock said the statute of limitations allowed the county probate judge to appoint Evans. She will be taking the place of coroner Diana New as the Shelby County Coroner.

Commissioners and county engineer Randy Cole asked that Shelby County residents be mindful of downed trees after severe weather, too. While the city is aware that trees may have fallen, sometimes they are unable to clear the trees due to live power lines in the area and must wait until the power is cut.
