Detectives following leads for hit-and-run suspect

Birmingham Police Department detectives are following leads for a suspect involved in a hit-and-run accident that left one woman dead on U.S. 280.

Police received a call regarding the accident at 5:39 a.m. The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 280 and Key Drive, near the Chick-fil-A.

A vehicle struck the victim as she crossed U.S. 280, and witnesses have described the suspect vehicle as a white pickup truck.

“At this point, they’re just following up on these [leads] to identify the driver,” said Lt. Theophilus Smith.

The victim’s remains have been transferred to Montgomery for an autopsy, and her identity will be released after family is notified.

Traffic on U.S. 280 was delayed for more than an hour following the accident, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
