Election Recap: July 29
On Aug. 23, Chelsea and Hoover voters will have the chance to elect their 2016-2020 city council members and mayor. 280 Living will provide weekly recaps each week leading up to the election, so you can easily keep up with everything you need to know before you vote.
Here’s Chelsea’s latest:
- Absentee ballots are now available at Chelsea City Hall.
- The last day to register to vote is Aug. 8
- The Chelsea Business Alliance hosted a meet the candidates luncheon.
Here’s Hoover’s latest:
- Mike Royer, a longtime Birmingham area TV newsman who recently took a job as managing editor for the University of Alabama’s WVUA-TV/Channel 23, has agreed to serve as moderator for an election forum featuring Hoover mayoral and City Council candidates on Aug.16. The forum will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham — The Wynfrey Hotel and is sponsored by the Hoover Sun, Hoover City Schools Foundation and Hoover Rotary Club. To submit suggested questions for candidates, go to this Google form. Alternatively, questions can be emailed to Jon Anderson with the Hoover Sun at janderson@starnespublishing.com.
- Hoover Councilman Joe Rives was appointed to the council in February 2015 and now is trying to get elected to the post to serve four more years. To do so, he must beat Dr. Trey Lott, whom he was appointed to replace, and Bluff Park resident Curt Posey. Read more about Rives here.

Other important information:
- Voters must register by Aug. 8 and regular absentee ballots must be applied for by Aug. 18.
- A runoff election, should it be required, will be held Oct. 4. Elected officials will take office Nov. 7.
- Bluffparkal.org and the Monte D’Oro Neighborhood Association are co-hosting a municipal candidate forum for all mayoral and City Council candidates from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Shades Crest Baptist Church.
