Election Update: July 21
On Aug. 23, Chelsea and Hoover voters will have the chance to elect their 2016-2020 city council members and mayor. 280 Living will provide weekly recaps each week leading up to the election, so you can easily keep up with everything you need to know before you vote.
Here’s the latest:
- Election qualifying has officially closed! Here is a complete list of candidates for Chelsea and Hoover.
Hoover news:
- Qualifying ended Tuesday, and three more men put their names in to run for City Council, giving competition in all seven council races.
- Steve McClinton, who has served as president of the Hoover City Schools Foundation the past two years, signed up to become the third candidate for mayor.
- Hoover Council President Jack Wright, the longest-serving member of the council, announced at the end of Monday night's council meeting that he would not be seeking re-election.
- Councilman Jack Natter late last week also said he had changed his mind and decided not to seek another term.
Other important information:
- Voters must register by Aug. 8 and regular absentee ballots must be applied for by Aug. 18.
- A runoff election, should it be required, will be held Oct. 4. Elected officials will take office Nov. 7.
- Hoover: bluffparkal.org and the Monte D’Oro Neighborhood Association are co-hosting a municipal candidate forum for all mayoral and City Council candidates from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Shades Crest Baptist Church. - The Hoover Sun, Hoover City Schools Foundation and Hoover Rotary Club are sponsoring an election forum featuring mayoral and City Council candidates on Tuesday, Aug. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham — The Wynfrey Hotel. (Note: Mayoral candidate Steve McClinton has taken a leave of absence from the Hoover City Schools Foundation due to his candidacy. The foundation does not endorse political candidates.)
- Pick up a copy of 280 Living’s August issue to see profiles on all the candidates, plus information on where to vote and what to bring to the polls. The August paper should start arriving in mailboxes next week!
