About 25 percent of registered Shelby County voters turned out to the polls for primary elections on June 5, according to information from the Shelby County Probate Court, in order to select candidates who will be on the November ballot.

For several races on Tuesday's ballot, there was no Democratic candidate, and the winner of the Republican primary will go on to take that position. That was the case for most local seats up for grabs in November, with the exception of Place 2 on the Shelby County Board of Education.

The Shelby County Superintendent race was decided by a few hundred votes, with current Assistant Superintendent Lewis Brooks winning with 50.74 percent of the vote. Kristi Sayers followed with 49.26 percent. Several incumbents also secured their position, including Sheriff John Samaniego with nearly 70 percent of the vote, Jimmy Bice for Board of Education Place 1 with 71.01 percent of the vote, Coroner Lina Evans with 57.8 percent of the vote, Circuit Clerk Mary Harris with 58.72 percent of the vote and District 73 Representative Matt Fridy with 85.3 percent.

The race for Circuit Clerk Judge Place 2 will go to a runoff election between Patrick Kennedy and Phillip Bahakel. No Democrat qualified for this race. The runoff will be July 17.

280 Living has compiled the preliminary results for the June 5 primaries, including those affecting North Shelby County and neighboring Jefferson County, below. Also included on the list are races that will be on the November ballot, but that were not on the primary ticket.
