Firemen recognized for promotions at council meeting
Two members of the Chelsea Fire Department were recognized for their promotions at Tuesday night’s Chelsea City Council meeting.
Chief Wayne Shirley said one of the things he enjoys most about his role as fire chief is hiring young firefighters in service and being able to promote those who earn it.
Tommy King, who had been serving as Fire Marshal, has been promoted to Captain and will be over the new Station 33, which is scheduled to open in November.
“His background and knowledge have been instrumental in making sure the station meets all of our needs and that list is lengthy,” Chief Shirley said.
Billy Ricketts, who has been with the department for three years and was recently named Chelsea Firefighter of the Year, has been promoted to Lieutenant at Station 31.
King and Ricketts’ families were in attendance and their wives placed their pins on their husbands.
During the Mayor’s Report, Mayor Tony Picklesimer discussed the Waste Pro contract being taken over by Republic after it was approved by the Shelby County Commission on Monday.
Media director Wayne Morris gave an overview of the newly launched City of Chelsea website.
He said two of the main goals of the redesigned site were to inform people who may not know about the city and what it has to offer and also to serve the citizens.
The new fresh look and design is interactive and responsive on all devices. There will be multiple calendars, notification sign ups, a place for citizens to report a problem and emergency alerts.
Four resolutions were approved during the meeting:
- Approval to continue the use of (green) emergency lights for Chelsea COP vehicles.
- Approval for a quote from Kelley Contracting and Paving to resurface the library parking lot and amend the budget by $1,500 for the updated quote.
- Approval to award the first Nick Grant funds. 118 applications were received and a little over $110,000 will be distributed among the five Chelsea schools. Items to be purchased include 140 chrome books, 450 computer mice, 40 Ozobots, Probots and Bee-Bots, 131 different software applications and two Google Expedition sets. None of the money will be going to brick and mortar or sports.
- Approval to pay bills.
The next Chelsea City Council meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 5 with precouncil at 5 p.m. and regular council at 6 p.m.
