Gas leak contained, students returning to schools

by

A natural gas leak in the Indian Springs Village area led authorities to close two schools and a main road on April 10.

According to reports from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, a motor vehicle accident at 6:30 a.m. broke a natural gas pipeline on Alabama Highway 119. Deputies rerouted traffic in both directions. Students from Oak Mountain Elementary School were moved to Oak Mountain Intermediate School and students from Oak Mountain Middle School were sent to Oak Mountain High School.

The Sheriff’s Office reopened the road at approximately 8:20 a.m. As of 9:30 a.m., staff at OMES confirmed that the school had reopened and students were being bused back.

Drivers are still encouraged to drive cautiously in the area as there will be first responders and Alagasco employees there for some time.
