Grand Menorah Lighting at The Summit returns for 5th year

The Chabad of Alabama will host its fifth annual Grand Menorah Lighting at The Summit on Sunday, Dec. 22, at Saks Plaza.

The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and guests can enjoy traditional Chanukah treats including latkes, donuts, chocolate gelt (coins) drops, as well as entertainment for the whole family and traditional Chanukah songs.

The highlight of the event will be the lighting of the 15-foot menorah at 5:15 p.m. as one united community on the first night of Chanukah, which begins that evening and ends Dec. 30.

“Chanukah is the Festival of Lights and tells the story of the triumph of light over darkness, and good over evil,” said Rabbi Yossi Posner of Chabad of Alabama. “There is no better way to celebrate this message than united as a community.”

The menorah is a candelabra with nine branches. The ninth branch is used to light the other eight candles as each day of Chanukah is celebrated.

The event is a joint project of the Levite Jewish Community Center, Chabad of Alabama, and the Karl & Gladys Friedman LJCC Fund of the Birmingham Jewish Foundation.

The celebration is open to the public, and the Chabad of Alabama encourages everyone, from all religious backgrounds, to come by and share in the festivities and learn about the holiday.
