The Greater Shelby County Chamber’s Health Services Work Group will be hosting its inaugural Healthy Lifestyles Expo” on Feb. 5 from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at the Alabaster YMCA, 117 Plaza Circle.

In addition to exhibition booths there will also be healthy lifestyle information, health screenings, special presentations, nutrition information, physical activity demonstrations and  giveaways.

“Healthcare continues to be one of the most significant expenses businesses and individuals deal with on a regular basis," said Keyla Handley, the chamber’s director of community and workforce development. "Promoting healthy lifestyles is one way in which the chamber’s health services work group is trying to help.”

She explained that the group shares a health focus of the month in its monthly newsletter on a specific healthcare topic, but the work group felt that hosting this interactive and participatory event would be another way to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Attendees may participate in three complimentary programs scheduled during the expo that focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Those free programs are Healthy Exercise Options presented by Dana Harmon with the YMCA, Healthy Cooking presented by Donna Sibley with St. Vincent’s Health System and Diabetes Prevention presented by Keesha Nelson with the YMCA.

Dr. Zelia Baugh will also give a presentation during a Healthy Lifestyles Luncheon at noon. The cost for the luncheon is $10 per person and includes a healthy boxed lunch from Taziki’s.  Space is limited for the luncheon and reservations are required.

For additional information on the expo or to make a luncheon reservation, contact Keyla Handley at the chamber 663-4542 or via e-mail at keyla@shelbychamber.org.
