Kevin Spencer to enchant SECA guests at Hocus Focus

Magician and speaker Kevin Spencer will be the main event at this month’s Special Education Community Alliance meeting at Spain Park High School. The event is set for 6 p.m. on Sept. 28.

Spencer, like SECA founder and event organizer Dustin Chandler, is an advocate for special needs children.

“We’re just two big advocates who believe we can impact kids,” Chandler said.

Chandler founded SECA as a local networking resource and “beacon of hope” for special education children’s parents and the community as a whole.

“Before my child was diagnosed,” Chandler said, “I didn’t know much about the special needs community as a whole.”

Now, he’s trying to provide a “cohesive group” for members of the community personally intertwined with the lives of special education children, he said.

At this month’s SECA meeting, Spencer will give a presentation called The Hocus Focus Project, which strives to inspire kids to become more competent learners through its interactive lessons in illusions, demonstrating that anyone can master a magic trick.

“You have to think ‘outside the box’ when it comes to educating

special needs kids,” Chandler said of Spencer’s unique approach to learning.

SECA meetings are anticipated to be held once a month. All are welcome to attend.

“The children are what matters,” Chandler said, “and we want everybody to be included in this.”

The meeting will open at 6 p.m. in the Spain Park High School library in Hoover.
