Lego League Qualifier this weekend

The Stonecreek Montessori Academy Lego Robotics team has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming Central Alabama FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Qualifier. Teams from the central Alabama area will be participating in this regional Lego Robotics tournament, to be held at Stonecreek's temporary location at Christ Church United Methodist, 5901 Caldwell Mill Road, Saturday, November 23, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

The robot competition component of the tournament will run from approximately 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Challenges are fast-paced and are conducted in a sports-like format. This year's challenge is entitled "Nature's Fury." Teams have been charged with constructing innovative robotic designs that address ways of preparing for and responding to natural disasters. Entry is free for the media and spectators.

The tournament is one of several regional qualifiers leading up to the statewide FIRST Lego League State Championship. Winners of the regional qualifiers will compete in the state championship, which will take place in Huntsville on Jan. 25. After that stage, teams from various countries will compete in the St. Louis FIRST World Championship in April.

Stonecreek Montessori Academy (www.stonecreekmontessori.org) is Alabama's only Montessori school that spans from toddlers through 12th grade.
