On Tuesday, the Pelham Mayor's office released a statement cancelling the annual Fire on the Water event held at Oak Mountain State Park.

"In keeping with Governor Kay Ivey’s Safer At Home Order amended May 21, 2020, the City of Pelham in conjunction with Oak Mountain State Park have cancelled this year’s Fire on the Water scheduled for July 3, 2020. Our goal is to protect the safety, health and wellness of our residents, businesses and visitors. The strength of our community is our greatest asset and we will follow Governor Ivey’s mandate in order to stop the spread of infection and its impact on the community. The City will closely monitor all recommendations issued by the Governor and the State Health Officer and we look forward to holding events in the future. At this time there are no plans to reschedule this event."

Anna Jones, State Parks Division Coordinator said that Oak Mountain State Park supports the City of Pelham’s decision to cancel the event.

"Even as we acknowledge and understand many residents and park visitors look forward to the event every year, the public’s health and safety remains of paramount importance," she said. "We look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts with the City of Pelham and working with city officials in the future.”

The annual Peavines Run scheduled for July 4 presented by the Birmingham Track Club will still take place that morning. For information on that event, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/AL/Pelham/PeavineFallsRun.
