Police charge Tuscaloosa man in fatal hit-and-run

Birmingham Police Department investigators obtained warrants on a 31-year-old Tuscaloosa man Friday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run on U.S. 280.

Police received a call regarding the accident Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 5:39 a.m. The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 280 and Key Drive, near the Chick-fil-A.

A vehicle struck the victim, Margaret Allison Beard Elliot, 49, as she crossed U.S. 280 on foot. Elliot died of injuries from the collision.  

Michael Terry Canty III was arrested on Aug. 7 following several tips from the public, and warrants were obtained later that day. Canty was charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident and misdemeanor criminal tampering. The charges carried a total of $120,000 bond. Canty was held at Shelby County Jail and posted bond on Aug. 9.
