The Shelby County Chamber presented the 5th Annual Healthcare Professional of the Year program at the community luncheon on Aug. 28 at the Pelham Civic Complex and Arena.

Any healthcare professional in Shelby County was eligible for nomination, and the program was to recognize those who have been nominated for having made outstanding contributions in their profession.

Meg Baker, operations manager with Gym Time Fitness, was the featured speaker and presented a talk on Healthy Living- Making it a Lifestyle. She described a healthy lifestyle as “a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early” which she credited to the World Health Organization.

She encouraged the luncheon attendees to have a simple plan to follow that included making exercise fun by doing something enjoyable, having a workout partner for accountability and adding variety to each workout, mixing it up between things like walking, yoga, biking, weights and more.

Baker said being inactive is a risk factor, and as we age, things gained from exercise, like flexibility and balance, can decrease the potential for injury in the activities of daily living. She shared the National Physical Fitness guidelines are a minimum of 2.5 hours of exercise per week (or 30 minutes a day 5 days per week) and for health benefits, 5 hours of exercise per week (or one hour a 5 days per week).

“Just dedicating 30 to 60 minutes a day can help,” she said.

Her suggestions included healthy eating, eating a variety of foods and a diet that is rich in Omega 3, limiting typical American foods and eating foods that contain probiotics.

Following Baker’s talk, Pari Barzegari from the Shelby County Chamber called up each of the 34 nominees for the Healthcare Professional of the Year. Each received a memento from the Chamber.
