Shelby County Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks released a statement to parents via email on Thursday afternoon after the governor's announcement of Alabama schools closing for the rest of the school year due to the impact of COVID-19 on the state.

"School superintendents statewide just received this information along with you, and we will be conferring tomorrow with Dr. Mackey for additional details. I have been working with our leadership team and instructional staff leaders to determine the next steps for Shelby County Schools in terms of delivering instruction to students at home. I will share those details with you as soon as we have them finalized.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. While we have many decisions to make, I am encouraged by our school leaders, teachers and staff members. Be assured that we will work extremely hard to serve our students."

Online learning is scheduled to begin April 6 with an end date of around June 5.

Updated information will be sent out via email and the district's website at shelbyed.k12.al.us
