Shelby County Commission approves CPI increase with Waste Pro, discusses budget

The Shelby County Commission has passed a resolution regarding an annual adjustment of fees and charges for the county’s contract with Waste Pro of Alabama. The resolution came before the Commission during its final meeting in the month of August.

The increase was a Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase of 1.45 percent, or around $0.17 more per month for base service charges.

The CPI increase is allowed once a year as part of the county’s contract with Waste Pro, and the rate increase will begin Oct. 1. According to a letter from Waste Pro USA Division Vice President Scott Corley, the modification is “critical” for Waste Pro to maintain service levels.

“We did a scan of all the other counties that are providing service, and we’re still the lowest cost service in the state of Alabama,” said Chief Development Officer Chad Scroggins.

Other business included a work session to discuss the budget immediately following the meeting.

During the work session, Coroner Lina Evans asked to use the $35,000 left in her FY17 budget to purchase a new vehicle, which she said the coroner’s office desperately needs. Her office’s current vehicle, a 2004 Trailblazer, has become a “money pit.” The Commission did not need to approve the purchase, as the money was still in the budget, but present commissioners voiced their support of the purchase. Evans said she was happy with her FY18 budget, and said she was applying for grant money which can help cover other costs.

Property tax commissioner Don Armstrong discussed his office’s budget. Overall, his office helps generate money and produces net gains for the county.

“Bottom line is just what he said. He is generating a lot more money than he’s costing,” said County Chief Financial Officer Butch Burbage.

The county also discussed other budget items, including the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, water services and landfill budgets during the work session.
