Shelby County Schools planning for drive through graduations

Shelby County Schools have announced plans for graduation ceremonies for all seven of the district's high schools.

In an email to the Senior Class of 2020 on Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks shared that the current plan is for students to receive their diplomas at drive through graduation ceremonies to be held at each high school the week of June 15.

However, Dr. Brooks noted this plan leaves the option to modify quickly to offer a more traditional graduation ceremony if the governor's health order is changed or lifted on May 15.

If the drive through plan remains in place, students may be accompanied by immediate family members only and will receive a specific time to receive their diplomas at their school’s drive through graduation. Each school will announce the date and time that their graduation will be held.

"I share in your disappointment that we are not offering a traditional ceremony at this time," Dr. Brooks shared in his email to the students and families. "COVID-19 has truly changed our approach and continues to be a moving target."

Commencement addresses from each school will be previously recorded and posted during the June 15 graduation week on the district's YouTube Channel and other social media platforms.
