In light of recent car break-ins, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is advising citizens to “Hide it, lock it, keep it.”

The Sheriff’s Office posted a video on Facebook where investigator Robert Rodriguez offered tips to protect valuables and prevent car break-ins. Rodriguez said it is important to remove all valuables from your vehicle when arriving home, lock your car doors and park in well-lit areas or inside a garage. The video also showed a woman moving her purse from the front seat of her car to the car’s locked trunk. Rodriguez also encouraged notifying the police if something seems off.

“Remember, if you witness any suspicious behavior, immediately call 911. And as always, thank you for your partnership efforts in keeping our community safe,” Rodriguez said.

The warning comes following many car break-ins on June 23. While patrolling Chelsea neighborhoods, deputies noticed several cars with their doors open, and the owners later confirmed valuables were stolen. Six cars were burglarized.

Anyone with information about the burglaries can contact the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office investigative division at 669-4181.
