Author releases poetry book set on African Savanna

Local author Irene Latham will release her first book of children’s poetry, Dear Wandering Wildebeest: And Other Poems from the Water Hole, on Sept. 1.

The poems are set around a watering hole in the African Savanna desert.

“The words I first fell in love with were poems by Shel Silverstein, and my first works were love poems for my mother, written when I was a child. It just makes sense that I should be writing poems for kids,” said the Inverness resident.

Latham plans to release two more children’s poetry books in 2016.

She will celebrate her book release on Sept. 4 at Emmet O’Neal Library, 50 Oak Street. From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m, Latham will host a poetry workshop for children. From 4:45-7 p.m., there will be a reception featuring safari fun, friends, poetry, books and cake. Admission is free.
