In July 2016, BlackWatch Sports Performance opened in Chelsea after founder Randy Beckham decided to create his own high-intensity, all-inclusive athletic outlet.

BlackWatch, explained Director of Membership Mary Kate Smith, is a play on the more than 130-year-old regiment of the Scottish military, The Black Watch, which serves in a capacity similar to the U.S. Marine Corps.

So when the gym decided to hold an obstacle race, having a Scottish theme — and using the Black Watch traditional colors of navy green and navy blue — was an easy choice.

The BlackWatch Braveheart Challenge, a nod to the 1995 movie starring Mel Gibson, will take place at Oak Mountain State Park on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The 6-mile run will include 20 different obstacles aimed at challenging speed, stamina and strength, and can be run as an individual or as part of a team.

As a Shelby County business, Smith said BlackWatch wanted to show off the natural beauty of Oak Mountain State Park, and encourage those unfamiliar with the park to check it out in a fun way.

Participants can choose to complete the course in the competitive race, which will be timed and include prizes for the fastest runner, or in the open heats which are just for fun and personal challenge.

Registration for the event is $70 per racer ages 14 and older, and $40 for kids, with prices increasing as race day approaches. Participants can also register as a team for a discount.
