The Birmingham Track Club hosts the 38th annual Rick Melanson Peavine Falls Run on July 4.

The race is one of the four-race BTC Race Series and is named for one of the track club’s founding members, who also previously served as race director.

“We usually have about 500 to 600 people sign up for this run,” said BTC Vice President Hunter Bridwell. “It’s a family friendly event for anyone in and around Birmingham who wants to come out and have a great run on the Fourth of July.”

The race combines the challenges of a paved-surface race with a type of cross-country element, Bridwell said.

“The Peavine Falls Run is an in-between distance for runners,” he said. “The distance is 8.1 miles, with 6.9 of those miles on asphalt roadways, while the last 1.3 miles is on a cleared dirt trail.

“It’s a unique event in that it’s a combination of road race and trail race.”

The race begins at the Peavine Falls trailhead at Oak Mountain.

The top male and female winners will receive awards from the BTC, and there are awards for age-group winners as well. In the 2018 race, winners received gift cards from the Trak Shak, which — along withTherapySouth — sponsors the race.

Registration for the Peavine Falls Run is $25 until midnight on July 2. After that, registration is $30.
