The City of Chelsea is hosting the fifth annual Hoops for Gabe basketball tournament this weekend. Games will be played Dec. 10 and 11 at Forest Oaks Elementary, Chelsea Middle and Chelsea High School.

The tournament serves as a fundraiser for Hope for Gabe, a foundation that was started after Chelsea resident Gabe Griffin was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at 3 years old. Duchenne is a genetic disorder that slowly weakens and kills muscles, and most of those who are diagnosed are restricted to a wheelchair before they leave their teens. In past years, the tournament has raised thousands of dollars, councilman David Ingram said at the Dec. 6 Chelsea City Council meeting.

Over 40 teams from across the greater Birmingham area — including Chelsea, Oak Mountain, Briarwood, Helena, Vestavia, Mountain Brook, Hoover and Spain Park — will be participating in the tournament.

Games start Saturday at 9 a.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at all three locations. For more information, search Chelsea Youth Club on Facebook.
