Church continues movie night tradition

Movie nights are back this year at Chelsea Creek Community Church, and it continues to be a labor of love for the area.

When the church began five years ago, its main objective was to be a church reaching the entire community, and the Chelsea Park subdivision became an important part of that.

The neighborhood’s homeowner’s association wanted to hold events, and the church approached the members about providing services at no charge to the community.

One of the events became movie nights at Chelsea Park. The church brings in a 30-foot projection screen from Atlanta, and it also provides complimentary hot dogs, popcorn and water. Guests also bring their own snacks and are encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs. The event is at the park in the neighborhood after the first roundabout.

“Chelsea Creek makes no money off the events,” said Chelsea Creek’s worship pastor Glenn Lewis. “It’s our public service to the community. The main desire is to fit with our church slogan, which is ‘love well.’ We want to show love to the community of Chelsea and Chelsea Park.”

The family-friendly movie nights for all ages draw several hundred people, and last year’s “Frozen” showing garnered a crowd of more than 500.

The church recently purchased 15 acres of land from Eddleman Properties on the corner of Chelsea Park Drive and U.S. 280 East, and it hopes to break ground on a new facility in the next two years. They will eventually host the movie nights on that property.

In addition to the two movie nights planned, Chelsea Creek also is involved in other community events, including the Big Kaboom and Trunk or Treat.

“For the Big Kaboom, we serve food and drinks and work in conjunction with the city on that,” Lewis said. “Trunk or Treat is like a fall festival at which our members decorate their cars and give out candy.”

The nondenominational Christian church meets at 10 a.m. Sundays at 48 Chesser Crane Road, Suite K, behind the Winn-Dixie Shopping Center.

Schedule: May 20 - Friday Night Movie Night - showing “Inside Out;” July 3 - Big Kaboom; Aug. 19 - Friday Night Movie Night- movie TBD; Oct. 30 - Trunk or Treat.
