Distinguished Young Women of Shelby County is now accepting applications for its class of 2020.

The program is a branch of the national Distinguished Young Women organization, which gives female high school juniors an opportunity to compete for higher education scholarships, get to know other like-minded women their age, develop public speaking and interviewing skills and showcase their talents.

The organization is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls, founded in 1958.

While participants are eligible for cash scholarships given by the organization, they are also eligible for college-granted scholarships from more than 100 schools. These scholarships can cover everything from room and board to full tuition.

There is no fee to join, but in order for participants to qualify or win a scholarship, they have to participate in one of the organization’s programs.

According to the organization’s website, the programs evaluate participants on scholastics, interview, talent, fitness and self-expression. From there, participants can advance to the state level and later to the National Finals.

The application period started with an orientation for interested girls at Hoover Public Library on Jan. 27, and applications will remain open through the month of February.

If interested in applying for the 2020 class, fill out the electronic form at distinguishedyw.org/apply-now or call local chairwoman Donna Bagwell at 218-9070.
