Former Hoover chamber President Dan Ellis seeking Hoover Council Place 5
Dan Ellis, a former president of the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce, is seeking Place 5 on the Hoover City Council.
Ellis, a 45-year-old senior sales executive with Total Administrative Services Corp., said he knew it was time for the next generation to have an impact on the City Council when he learned that Council President Jack Wright was retiring.
And he believes he has the business background necessary to make smart, fiscally responsible decisions, he said.
“My goal is to make sure that Hoover takes a balanced approach to our budget so we can ensure that Hoover remains a great place to live and raise a family,” Ellis said. “I love this city and want to see it continue to grow and see it continue to be one of the most desirable places to be in the U.S.”
Ellis said Hoover had had remarkable residential growth that is “right on the mark” for a thriving city. “It’s proof that the city is vibrant,” he said.
In the future, he wants to see moderate and sustained growth that keeps up with supply and demand, he said.
Ellis also said he wants to work with other city leaders and the Board of Education to increase funding for Hoover City Schools while at the same time keeping taxes low.
He and his wife, Colleen, have two children in Hoover schools (Hoover High and Bumpus Middle School), and he recognizes that a strong public school system is critical to the overall health of Hoover, he said.
Other goals include inviting people to be more active in government, improving transparency and communication with the school board, attracting good-paying jobs and economic development opportunities, and supporting Hoover’s public safety departments and the athletic and recreational assets, such as city parks, the SEC Baseball Tournament and the new sports complex being built next to Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Ellis has been in sales for 25 years, including 15 years in the mortgage industry. He ran his own mortgage company in Birmingham until he closed it in 2008. He also has worked for Wachovia Bank and NCP Solutions. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgia Southern University.
He was president of the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce in 2009. He has been active with the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball and received the 2006-07 Leadership Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for his fundraising efforts.
Ellis originally moved to Hoover in 1995. He and his wife were married in Hoover in 1996 and lived in Trussville and Blount Springs. They moved back to the Trace Crossings community in Hoover in 2002. They are active members at Hunter Street Baptist Church.
