The Friends of Dunnavant Valley Greenway on Feb. 28 presented $5,000 to the Freshwater Land Trust to help preserve a portion of Double Oak Mountain.

The 250-acre, 2-mile ridgeline on Double Oak Mountain includes native longleaf pine and an undeveloped ridge.

“This property fits with the goal of our group to maintain the green nature of the valley,” said Ward Tishler, president of Friends of Dunnavant Valley Greenway.

Wendy Jackson, executive director of the FreshWater Land Trust, said the property also includes rare species such as the Confederate sunflower.

“This is a local grassroots effort of citizens accomplishing something special for the community,” Jackson said.

The Freshwater Land Trust took out a loan to purchase the property and allow time to complete fundraising. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the effort can visit freshwaterlandtrust.org.
