If families or friends are looking for last-minute July 4 plans, the Peavine Falls Run has them covered. Race Director Alex Morrow said for the first time this year, they are implementing new technology where people can sign up for the 8-mile race at any time online, even the morning of the race, instead of filling out race information by hand.

“This also eliminates the need for paper, makes us environmentally conscious,” he said.

This will be the event’s 37th year, Morrow said, with around 450 to 550 people expected to come to Oak Mountain State Park for the run.

Morrow described the race as “family-friendly and low-key,” with the opportunity for families to spend the rest of the day hanging out at the park, swimming at the beach or grilling out.

“It’s pretty amazing for a local race to have that kind of longevity,” he said. “It’s a local favorite since there’s not a lot of festivals during morning and day of the fourth.”

The race starts in upper picnic area in the Dogwood Pavilion, right at the base of Peavine Falls Road, and takes participants about 4 miles — mainly climbing uphill, Morrow said — on paved road, until they get to the falls. Then they turn back around on the same route, expect the last mile turns down a dirt road and comes back to the base.

Walkers start at 6:30 a.m., to get a head start, and runners begin at 7 a.m. Registration is $20, and the event is put on by the Birmingham Track Club as a way to give back to the community, Morrow said.

Morrow said for the first time this year, the race has an assistant race director, Hunter Birdwell.
