King’s Home Shelby, a faith-based non-profit in Chelsea, provides women and children with a safe refuge from abuse, neglect and homelessness.

Those who wish to support the ministry can attend a fundraiser, the Pumpkin Bash Chili Cook-Off, at Town Hall in Indian Springs Village on Oct. 28. The event – sponsored by King’s Home Shelby Auxiliary – will take place from 5 to 8 p.m.

Members of the Shelby County Board of Education will judge the best chili, according to event chairman Anne Bishop. The event will also include works of art for sale and auction, some donated by Thompson Frame Factory and Griffith Art Gallery.

Patsy Riley, former Alabama First Lady, will assist with the auction, Bishop said. Riley attended the 2017 event and called it “a wonderful and blessed night of great food and friendships.”

“To my amazement, there were pots and pots of chili I’d never seen before,” Riley said, referring to the varieties available at the cook-off.

Halloween costumes are optional. The event will also feature live music.

The Auxiliary uses event proceeds to help pay the electric bill at King’s Home, according to Auxiliary President Pam Bradford. Last year’s inaugural Pumpkin Bash got a good response, according to Bradford.

“People enjoyed sampling a variety of chili last year and voting on their favorite chili,” Bradford said. “People also enjoyed being creative with their costumes.”
