The Miss Shelby County Scholarship Pageant is once again returning to Shelby County High School in Columbiana. The pageant will take place Saturday, July 21, at 7 p.m. The deadline to enter is July 15.

Miss Shelby County 2018 will go on to compete in Miss Alabama, which feeds into the Miss America Organization.

“The system is all about community service and scholarships,” said pageant Director Pam Oliver, noting that the winner of the Sonya Lefkovits Community Service Award in the Miss Shelby County Pageant receives a $500 scholarship.

Winners for the community service award will be selected based on scrapbooks that show the work they did for their platform — a charity or cause they chose to support.

“[Their platform] can be multiple things. It can be cancer, it can be obesity in children, it can be healthy habits,” Oliver said. “It can be anything they choose.”

Scholarships are also offered by the University of Montevallo and Jefferson State Community College.

The girls will have a one-on-one interview off stage regarding their platform and current events, as well as an on-stage question, swimsuit/fitness and eveningwear phases of the competition.

To participate, contestants must be between 17 and 23 years old and either live, work or go to school in Shelby, Chilton, Jefferson, Talladega, Bibb, Coosa or St. Clair counties.

Tickets for the July 21 competition are $15. For more information, go to missshelbycounty.com.
