For the fifth year in a row, Morningstar United Methodist Church will host its annual Blue Christmas on Friday, Dec. 13, from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Morningstar UMC Pastor Mark Puckett knows the holiday season is a challenging time and created the holiday event in 2015 to help people through the grieving process of a loss — not just limited to the loss of a loved one, but also the loss of a job, friend, a major life change or for those who are in need of hope.

“This season is just not the Hallmark Channel, and we realize that, so we wanted to do something unique to benefit those going through challenging times,” Puckett said. “Loss can come in death, fractured relationships, change in employment or of location after a move. Change and loss comes in all types of ways, and this is just a way for people to be reminded what the season is about.”

The event is self-led and allows guests to take all the time they need and come and go at their own pace.

Puckett said the first two years there was a set time, but said, “I thought if we did it as a come and go event, that would give more people the opportunity to participate. But this way, they can come before work or school, come during the day or after work as late.”

There will be several stations with reflection points, candles to light, instrumental music and an in-depth reflection similar to a printed sermon. Everything will be labeled and simple to navigate.

Puckett said that how long people stay in the stages of grief varies, and they want to be respectful of everyone no matter where they are on the journey.

“Although you don't necessarily get over a loss, through hope, you can get past it while never forgetting it occurred. Sometimes it’s good to just have a good cry, too,” Puckett said.

The holidays are a rushed time for many people, and this event provides a time to just be still.

“During the holidays we rarely change our workloads and daily life, and just pile things on top of it, which leaves a great deal of stress and anxiety for a lot of folks. This is a way for people to unplug,” Puckett said.

Puckett said this program has been one of the greatest outreach ideas that God has given them, and they are thankful to be able to offer it again this year.

The event is free, and communion will be available for those who are interested.
