Mary Ann McDougal, a 2014 graduate of Oak Mountain High School, recently held a yard sale to help Shelby County Humane Society and other statewide shelters.

According to a release from For the Animals, the organization that sponsored the event, McDougal held a “FLEA” market to raise funds. Those funds will be used to purchase supplies for animals at the Shelby Humane Society and other shelters.

McDougal started For the Animals in 2012 as part of her community service efforts as a participant in the Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen Pageant, according to the release, and the organization focuses on animal advocacy, awareness and education.

An animal sciences, pre-veterinary medicine major at Auburn University, McDougal said she was excited about the turnout of the event.

“Animals are my heart and my passion, and I am thrilled to be able to provide some much needed support to the very places that house them until they find their forever homes,” said McDougal, who is also a student employee at Auburn University’s small animal teaching hospital.

McDougal is the current Miss Coastal Alabama and will participate in the upcoming Miss Alabama Pageant from June 7-10 at Samford University.

“The work I do is more than just a platform,” said McDougal.  “It is my future and what I am committing my life to. I have a vision and a message that will, hopefully, resonate with many — a message that will change for the better the way our animals are treated.”
