On May 6, the seventh annual Run for Kids will return to Oak Mountain State Park with three different races: a 12-Hour Challenge Trail Race, a 50K Trail Race and a 10K Challenge.

Called the “perfect run for a ‘first-ultra,’” all races are on the new Lake Trail and Rattlesnake trail behind Double Oak Lake, with gently rolling hills. The 12-Hour Challenge is a challenge to see how far racers can run in 12 hours, the 50K racers will circle the route for five laps, and the 10K racers only complete one lap of the course.

Awards will be given to male and female top-three finishers for all races and finisher cups will be given to all 12-Hour Challenge and 50K finishers.

According to the Southeastern Trail Runs website, the Run for Kids raised more than $14,000 in 2015, which was donated to Camp Smile-A-Mile, Alabama’s program for children with cancer and to a special fund to help rebuild schools in Kathamandu, Nepal, after a severe earthquake hit the area.

This year, the race is again benefiting Camp Smile-A-Mile and also the Seven Summit Foundation to continue helping with the Nepal relief effort.
