Both Shelby County and the City of Hoover will offer residents an easy way to recycle their Christmas trees into useful materials for public projects.

The county will have five locations where people can drop off their old trees, according to Chad Scroggins, Chief Development Officer for Shelby County.

Trees can be dropped off from Dec. 27 through Jan. 3 at the following locations:

► Heardmont Park on Cahaba Valley Road on U.S. 119

► Chelsea City Hall

► Ray Building on Highway 70 in Columbiana

► AmStar Theatre at the Alabaster Colonnade

► Pelham City Park, at the U.S. 31/ 119 entrance

The county is offering the free service with Chelsea, Pelham and Propst Alabaster LLC.

The trees will be recycled into materials to use in landscaping and in erosion and sediment control.

“We will also use some for fish habitat at Oak Mountain State Park,” Scroggins said.

Drop-off locations will be in parking lots and marked with signs and traffic cones.

The city of Hoover will again offer a recycling drop for Christmas trees in the parking lot on Municipal Lane across the street from the Hoover Lake House, which is located at 300 Municipal Lane. The drop will be marked with signage.

Trees are to be used for enhancing fish habitat in lakes and will be accepteduntil Jan. 31.
