The Shelby County Alabama Tuskegee Alumni Club, a non-profit organization under the Tuskegee National Alumni Association, partners with the Greystone YMCA in a shared commitment to education, honesty, respect and social responsibility.

The growth and vitality of communities in Shelby County depend upon the academic and social development of the children. Higher education helps families earn more and live a longer and more productive life. The effects of a college degree are felt across communities and through generations.

Working together with the Greystone YMCA Youth Development Program, students get help with homework, math and science, character development and health and wellness. Families can attend free workshops to get information about college admissions, SAT and ACT requirements and assistance with filling out college applications and forms for financial aid.

The proceeds from the Tuskegee Alumni Club’s fundraising will benefit the club’s scholarship fund and the Greystone YMCA youth development program. Fundraising for scholarships is a vital part of what the club does, as scholarships help give students in need access to college and help with books, fees and other expenses.

Michael Glenn, a Leeds native, was the honoree and recipient of the Community Service Award and a scholarship fund established in his name at the club’s Aug. 25 meeting. The distinguished award was presented by William Mathis, president of the club, and the event was held in the home of Betty Slaughter in Indian Springs.

The club also sent numerous accolades, proclamations and donations, including to the state governor, State Senate, House of Representatives, City of Leeds Mayor’s Office, Jefferson County Commissioners Office, Birmingham City Council, NAACP Birmingham Office, Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce, Binnie Myles, Summit Media Corp. and many local businesses who sponsored the club’s event.
