The XTERRA series returns to Oak Mountain State Park this May for triathletes and runners alike who would like a local challenge.

Three distances will be available for the triathlon event: full, with a 1.5-kilometer swim, followed by a 30-kilometer mountain bike and a 10-kilometer trail run; sprint, with a 750-meter swim, followed by a 15-kilometer mountain bike and a  5-kilometer trail run; and “Xticer,” with a 200-meter swim, followed by a 10-kilometer mountain bike and 2-kilometer trail run.

While the full-length race will feature a $15,000 prize for elite athletes, amateurs and beginners are also welcome to try any length of the race. Races begin at 8 a.m. on May 21.

The following morning, runners will take over the courses for 5K, 10K and 20K races through the park. All three courses will be on the trails in Oak Mountain State Park. Age-group winners for the 20K race will receive a free entry to the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in December, and awards will be given for additional races as well. Runners will start at 8 a.m. on May 22.

As part of the XTERRA weekend, hair salon Paul Mitchell is also hosting a Cut-a-Thon, during which stylists will be available on-site to provide professional haircuts in exchange for a $15 or greater donation to the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
