School board approves budget for FY 2021
The Shelby County Board of Education’s budget for 2021 was approved during their Sept. 10 meeting.
Superintendent of Finance for Shelby County Schools, John Gwin, had presented a summary of the budget at the last two board meetings, and it was unanimously approved by the board.
The total revenues were $257,203,811.90 and the total expenditures were $277,006,081.82, leaving an ending fund balance of $31,992,737.30. The budget will run for Fiscal year October 1, 2020-Sept. 30, 2021.
During the superintendent’s report, Dr. Lewis Brooks thanked Rep. Arnold Mooney and Rep. Matt Fridy for the check they presented to him on Sept. 9 in the amount of $24,000 for the purchase of ChromeBooks for schools in the district.
Brooks also thanked the National School Public Relations Association for naming him in a recent article as a “superintendent to watch.”
“It is a great honor and a testament to our team,” Brooks said. “I give everyone involved with that doing as school district credit and don’t accept for myself but for everyone.”
Board president Aubrey Miller said that he was increasingly proud of the central office team, and Dr. Brooks nomination was well deserved.
In the instruction report, Lauren Woolley, technology coordinator for SCS, gave a presentation about the cybersecurity measures in place for the district. She discussed topics including network administrators and engineers, employee training, antivirus protection, secure backup, firewalls and content filters.
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lynn Carroll, said they wanted to be transparent, but also not give out too many details.
Facilities and Maintenance Coordinator Randy Reeves discussed several projects with change orders and new construction contracts:
A change order was made for partial re-roofring of the Linda Nolen Learning Center by Johns and Kirksey, Inc. that added $19,131 to the total cost for decking and wood blocking replacement and re-roofing to the entrance area.
The contract for the partial re-roofing at Chelsea Middle School and Vincent Middle/High School was decreased by $44,000 from Standard Roofing of Montgomery, Inc.
Approving a construction contract for a mechanical package for the new weight room at Vincent Middle/High School mechanical package for HVAC work was awarded to Yarbrough Mechanical $25,000.
Other items approved during the meeting were:
- Appeal for fleet insurance, which includes the over 300 buses, 100 service vehicles, band trailers and more for $345,207.
- Approving of grant for FY2021 distribution for community partners that the SCS traditionally supports. Those are Owens House ($14,000), The DAY Program ($14,000) and Family Connections ($40,000). The funds for the allocations are received from the state and the total amount to be distributed is $68,000.
- Approval of the FY2021 DAY Program agreement for $393,335.00.
- Approval of approving easement agreement for project at Calera Middle School
- Approval of personnel actions
- Approval of bus subs and aides
