Chelsea High School hires new administrator

Matthew Stephens is starting his school year a few days after the other administrators.

The Shelby County Board of Education announced on Friday the approval of Stephens as assistant principal at Chelsea High School. Stephens' first day is Monday, Aug. 17.

Stephens has more than eight years of experience in public education, including his current position with the Hoover City School system. Stephens has a bachelor’s degree in math from Birmingham Southern and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Alabama.

Chelsea High School principal Wayne Trucks said Stephens' experience as a math teacher brings a new perspective to the position. It's also beneficial to have a new set of eyes on the school, Trucks said.

"It's always good to have new people in the building," Trucks said. "I've been at Chelsea for eight years, and it's always neat to bring in teachers and administrator from the outside."

Stephens is replacing former assistant principal Josh Britnell, who now works at Spain Park as an assistant principal.
