The school year is off to a normal start despite continued construction at Chelsea Middle School, said Principal Andrew Gunn.

Renovation and construction projects started in January, bringing a new front entrance, two new hallways, a renovated gym and renovated bathrooms to the school. Some projects, such as floor renovations in the sixth grade wing, a new front entrance and a new gym floor, are complete. Others will continue into late September or early October.

Despite the delays, Gunn said the construction company, Clements Dean Building Company, has done its best to minimize disturbance to the school day.

“100 percent, they’re very professional,” Gunn said. “They work very well with us.”

The renovations will help modernize the school and accommodate growing numbers, Gunn said, as well as help connect the building that formerly housed Chelsea Intermediate to the main building. The cost of the projects is $2.25 million, which is divided between two fiscal years.

Gunn said although the project will take longer than the initially projected September finish, students and parents are looking forward to the result.

“Students and parents have adapted to the inconvenience, I think,” Gunn said. “For the most part everyone is excited for what the finished project will be.”
